Global Ski Traveler, "Buttian" at Heart
Tony joined Avant Ski during our first season to share his local knowledge of select resorts and his experience in the backcountry. Tony Powe grew up in France a weekend skier, met a crazy dude who preferred to climb mountains before skiing down them, moved from Europe to the USA, bought a cabin in Crested Butte, vowed to ski every year while keeping a job as owner of restaurants and bars in NYC.
20 years on, he still skis, with the same dude (at least twice a year!), runs a start-up called WeLocals focused on encouraging support for local businesses and communities and obsesses about all things ski and how to still get up those mountains as maturity sets in!
Favorite Resort / Trail:
Double Top Glades at Crested Butte; Riding to the top of Vallugabahn 2 and skiing down to Zurs at Lech / St Anton in Austria (must be accompanied by a mountain guide)
Hokkaido in Japan and somewhere in the Andes - any suggestions?
2020-21 Season Goals:
Keep skiing - get better - have fun. Use Avant ski as an excuse to get distracted from other work
Most Days in a Season:
100 while working at Chamonix

Exclusive Interview with Tim Stroh, Ski Instructor (A-Basin)
We speak with Tim Stroh, going into his 13th season as a ski instructor, about how he made skiing into a career, the unique and diehard culture at the legend, how to take fear out of the equation, his continual question to learn, and his top picks for all things related to skiing.
Crested Butte Resort Review
Crested Butte (CB, as the locals call it) is the kind of place where shops close on big powder days! That's telling about where most "Buttians" hearts lie and goes a long way to explain how it can be both laid back AND one of the most challenging ski areas. CB is the birthplace of U.S. Extreme skiing and 35% of terrain is rated Double Black.
Arapahoe Basin Resort Review
If you think parking at A-Basin is the hardest thing, try skiing down the 46% pitch on 5th Alley. A-basin is not for the faint-hearted - no late morning starts, no ski in ski out and definitely no night life. The Legend is all about skiing and that it takes very seriously. A-Basin offers 5 or 7 days on the Ikon Pass or 2 or 3 days on the Mountain Collective.
